Stir up Sunday

It's this Sunday so I hope you've all got your Christmas cake and Christmas pudd ingredients to hand.
Stir-up Sunday comes the last Sunday before the season of Advent. It gets its name from the beginning of the collect of the eucharist for the day in the Book of Common Prayer. The collect begins with the words, "Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people".
As it comes at just the right time for ensuring cakes and puddings are made ready for Christmas, the words have always had a double purpose.
