It's been known for some time that smoking makes pain from artjhritis worse and that smokers are more likely to get autoimmune forms of arthritis than non-smokers.

But, apparently, smokers with or without arthritis feel pain more keenly than non-smokers and it can be a precipitating factor in lots of diseases. Time to give up?

"almost every medical condition can be caused, or made worse by, smoking.

"This includes cancers, heart and respiratory disease, blindness, deafness, diabetes, dementia and infertility. Smokers also take longer to recover from operations and it's more likely the outcome will be a failure."

The findings are based on an analysis of data from more than 220,000 people conducted by UCL.
